I haven't abandoned BunkoSquad...far from it. I've just been superbusy builiding the BunkoSquad SportsBlog and so haven't had time to watch the news, let alone form opinions on it. I promise there will be a new DGMS and a new movie review up within a week; in the meantime, read the sports stuff.

What, you may ask, does

What, you may ask, does the hardworking staff at America's best bookstore discuss during the day? Dostoevsky? Derrida? Dickens? Actually, most of today's banter centered around henweighs, Hertz doughnuts, and snoo. And yes, I was responsible for most of it. Alan, who has never been above a room-clearing pun, told me I was really going with the B-material. I said, "I'm trying", and he said that was the problem.

This screenshot on Jeffrey Zeldman's site just cracked me up. See if you can guess why.

I made my first foray

I made my first foray into the realm of participatory public grumpiness last night. WBZ news occasionally solicits opinions from their viewers, giving an email address to write to about the hot topic of the day. At the end of the broadcast, they read a few. Last night, the topic was Jane Swift and Mitt Romney. My comment, something along the lines of

"I guess I'm supposed to be excited that somebody rich and famous has deigned us worthy of being our Governor. Can we please have some idea of what he stands for?"

was the first one shown. I even got a bemused "okay...." from anchorman Joe Shortsleeve. I feel quite empowered as a citizen right now.

I didn't watch the press

I didn't watch the press conference in which Mitt Romney announced his intentions to run for Massachusetts Governor, but I can assume it went something like this: "I am the right leader for Massachusetts, and my policies will support that. Like my stance on...well, you know. And I have strong opinions about other things, too. I will find some issues that matter and perhaps support them. Until then, support Romney in '02 - I'm A Very Handsome Man."

Some links to check while

Some links to check while I ponder whether the tradeoff from only having one Red Sox player (Ugie Urbina) on my fantasy team is too much of a drawback from getting Vlad Guerrero and Scott Rolen - both in audition mode all year - and four great A's and Twins pitchers (no, it's not):

Two good baseball blogs I've seen lately: bambinoscurse.com is updated daily by a passionate Sox fan. Definitely worth a look. And from his site I found Tony Pierce's just-started baseball blog. He's still bitter about the Raiders-Pats game, but we'll forgive him for now, since the blog looks provocative and fun to read.

My thoughts on the 2002 Sox? Well, the Pats won, the Celtics and Bruins are comfortably playoff-bound, and Holy Cross just scared the sorghum out of Kansas, so anything's possible. I'll leave it at that.

In non-baseball-related news, the Harvard Book Store won Bookseller of the Year from Publisher's Weekly. Yeah. We rule.

One more quiz result...thanks, little sister.

My Smiths anthem is...'Bigmouth Strikes Again' My Smiths anthem is... "Bigmouth Strikes Again"
You seem to have self-punishment honed to a fine art. Whether it's true or not, you always feel alone, always feel you've done wrong, and probably blame your problems on your own supposed lack of everything important. You may have a sense of humor about it all, but that doesn't help you overcome it very well. It's probably not as bad as it seems, you know...
"Bigmouth Strikes Again" is from The Queen Is Dead or Best...2.

It's become clear in the

It's become clear in the last few days that the human race is too incompetent to be trusted with something as advanced and high-tech as the automobile. First, we have the charming Texas lady who hit a guy with her car and left him bleeding and dying in her garage for 3 days. To her credit, she did occasionally check on him and apologize, but apparently taking the next step and dialing 911 was a little much to ask. Next time anyone says something is "the least they can do" remember this. This, by the way, is not to be confused with the Texas lady who drowned her kids in the bathtub.

Closer to home (well, unless you live in Texas), we have the senile delinquent who went for a ride and wound up in Kentucky, 857 miles away. Not to mention Boston Herald columnist Beverly Beckham, who got so engrossed in a book-on-tape that she took the wrong highway and ended up 40 miles where she wanted to be.

Color me reactionary, but these people all were awarded drivers' licenses, giving them the right to operate thousands of pounds of lethal machinery. Shouldn't the driver's test be at least as daunting as filling out a membership application at Blockbuster?
