It's become clear in the

It's become clear in the last few days that the human race is too incompetent to be trusted with something as advanced and high-tech as the automobile. First, we have the charming Texas lady who hit a guy with her car and left him bleeding and dying in her garage for 3 days. To her credit, she did occasionally check on him and apologize, but apparently taking the next step and dialing 911 was a little much to ask. Next time anyone says something is "the least they can do" remember this. This, by the way, is not to be confused with the Texas lady who drowned her kids in the bathtub.

Closer to home (well, unless you live in Texas), we have the senile delinquent who went for a ride and wound up in Kentucky, 857 miles away. Not to mention Boston Herald columnist Beverly Beckham, who got so engrossed in a book-on-tape that she took the wrong highway and ended up 40 miles where she wanted to be.

Color me reactionary, but these people all were awarded drivers' licenses, giving them the right to operate thousands of pounds of lethal machinery. Shouldn't the driver's test be at least as daunting as filling out a membership application at Blockbuster?
