Insert Sports Flamewar Here

In lieu of giving a laundry list of reasons why I'm one of those Americans who is mildly intereted in the World Cup, but generally can't stand soccer, I offer this.

The Red Sox and White Sox played 19 innings in Chicago yesterday. They played until somebody won. They didn't stop after 12 innings and have a bunt-off to determine the winner.

There has to be a better way than penalty kicks.

Maybe after 2 OTs both teams play without a goalie? That way more offense-defense strategy could help decide it.

Maybe after 2 OTs, only people on the bench who had not played before play? That way the team that has the fuller t-e-a-m would win.

Something.

For baseball, what if instead of a bunt-off, there were a head-but-off? Oh wait, that is the world cup.

I'd be wary of being smashed by the giant artificially-enhanced heads of Barry Bonds or Jason Giambi.

David Ortiz's solution to 19 inning games: After 15 innings, have a home-run derby to determine the winner. Each team chooses who on the other team will represent. Papi says they'd pick Doug Mirabelli, which would work out for the Red Sox. Doug hits homers like Reggie Jackson in batting practice, like Michael Jackson in games.

I like soccer but I also find games ending with penalty kicks less than satisfying.

The problem is that it is hard to keep playing a game like soccer indefinately.

I think they should a play a full game after a day of rest.

I think this was done in the past.

i agree with the sentiment but also wonder if the folks at the shootout have as bad a sunburn as a girl who only made it through 15.5 innings.
food for thought.

meanwhile, food at the concession stands would have been cool.

meanwhile, i'm bad luck for papelbon.

meanwhile, and i'm almost finished, i think it makes sense to play the game as it was intended to be played until there is a clear winner. however, a heartier bullpen never hurt anybody.
