Get Lost, Mitt
Seriously. The only things that make you actually show your face in the state you allegedly govern are disasters and antigay rallies. What a stand-up guy.
So the ridiculous Family Research Council chose a rally in Boston to show to all their friends at churches nationwide the horrible effects gay marriage has wrought on the Commonwealth. Horrible effects like....well, I can't think of any. But clearly there are some, because if this is a big enough issue to bring the Governor to Boston, there must be some compelling reason.
Mitt told the rabid religious crowd that "activist judges struck a blow to the foundation of civilization -- the family". Again, I haven't heard of one family in Massachusetts dissolving because of gay marriage, but what do I know, I've only been in Massachusetts this whole time and not going to fundraisers in South Carolina.
Romney continued, "What (the judges) ignored is that marriage is not primarily about adults, marriage is about the nurturing and development of children ... every child deserves a mother and a father." Actually, Mitt, as someone in charge of state government, you ought to be aware that marriage is a legal contract issued by the state. You can look over the relevant laws if you like; I didn't see anything there about children. But the facts are certainly on your side; that is, assuming you're running for President in 1952.
Tony Perkins, head of the noxious FRC, said, "When we look at what has happened with same-sex marriage, as it began in this state and threatens to spread across the country, we've seen in its wake the loss of religious freedoms and the ability to speak out based upon one's moral convictions." Again, he has no actual examples of anything happening, but since he spends all his days researching families, I'm sure he has some concrete evidence.
And Mr. Perkins, I'm going to go ahead and speak out based upon my moral convictions. You are a first-class bigot and liar, and history will soon see you as a fossil. And if Americans have any sense at all, they'll soon send you and Governor Mitt into the irrelevance you so richly deserve.

Nice post!
Were you there?
The AP wire story seems to have been written by someone who wasn't there and doesn't mention the vigils going on outside. The only mention I can find at all of the vigils only mentions the knowthyneighbor and other folks who were yelling, name-calling, making Hitler references, etc.
BayWindows interviewed me; when their story comes out, maybe it will also mention all the peaceful candle-lighters and church groups and so forth that were also opposing the event.

No, I wasn't there; unfortunately, I didn't hear anything about it until after the fact. I'm glad (and not a bit surprised) that there was a good presence, though.

This is also an embarassment for the Tremont Temple. I know at least one performing-arts group who is considering moving their shows out of the Temple because their gay members no longer feel comfortable performing there.

Mitt is a schmuck ... In other words, a perfect candidate for the Republicans. But frightening to think that people actually back this man.
The only upside to his whoring himself around the U.S. trying to get the big nomination is that he's spending less and less time in MA.
I say if gay men and women want to give marriage a try, why not? I think they're brave for wanting to give an instituion a try that boasts a 50% divorce rate.

* “This is a subject about which people have tender emotions in part because it touches individual lives. It also has been misused by some as a means to promote intolerance and prejudice. This is a time when we must fight hate and bigotry, when we must root out prejudice, when we must learn to accept people who are different from one another. Like me, the great majority of Americans wish both to preserve the traditional definition of marriage and to oppose bias and intolerance directed towards gays and lesbians.”
o Governor Mitt Romney, 06-22-2004 Press Release
* “Preserving the definition of marriage should not infringe on the right of individuals to live in the manner of their choosing. One person may choose to live as a single, even to have and raise her own child. Others may choose to live in same sex partnerships or civil arrangements. There is an unshakeable majority of opinion in this country that we should cherish and protect individual rights with tolerance and understanding. “

Mike,
That first quote sure sounds nice.
As for the second, I can easily rewrite the first sentence to say, "[Expanding] the definition of marriage [does] not infringe on the right of individuals to live in the manner of their choosing," and it's no less true. And I read his whole press release you quote; he says, essentially, that allowing same-sex marriage will "ultimately define marriage to mean nothing at all", and says he's against children being raised by same-sex couples, because there aren't enough scientific data to show that those children come out ok.
He also tries to turn around the "intolerance" label, "I am also troubled by those on the other side of the issue who equate respect for traditional marriage with intolerance." He's conveniently ignoring the fact that it's not a zero-sum game, that you can "respect" traditional marriages and also be open to an expansion of the definition. As for who's tolerant and who's not, look to who wants to cut and restrict the rights of others.
Picking a couple nice-sounding quotes from a lengthy speech doesn't change the fundamental fact of Mitt Romney's commitment to intolerance...at least when there are Southern primary voters who might be listening.
