RIP Lansdowne Street

Sooz mentioned this last night, and now it seems to be official. Patrick Lyons is going to gut all the clubs on Lansdowne and turn it into a "swanky illuminated entertainment and dining district" (emphasis and vomit mine), with one big arena and a bunch of hoity toity restaurants where they'll probably charge you 5 bucks to look at the menu.

Lyons said the larger scale of the new venue is necessary for Boston to attract top-tier music acts in an era where live performances are more important than ever for artists.

Boy, it'll be nice to bring in some top-tier music acts for a change. Just think, all those times I've gone to Avalon or one of the other clubs, it was to see pikers like Morrissey, Beck, Tori Amos, Iron and Wine, Calexico, Liz Phair, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Frank Black, The Tragically Hip, and probably more that I've forgotten. Bring on Nickelback!

The humor in this situation is that I usually think of the Avalon as being one of the biggest venues that I'll still go to.

awww... Like many other kids from Mass, I spent the first moments of my 21st birthday on Lansdowne street with my first legal drink. Why do they have to go and mess stuff up to be all commercialized? dammit!

Ug, that's the worst news I've heard all day!
Doesn't the city already have the Orpheum, BofA Pavillion, and Agganis Arena for medium sized places? Well, we'll still have the Paradise, Middle East, and even the Roxy....but I will certainly miss Avalon. I saw my first show there in like 1993....the Lemonheads.

you know what will be neat? when this illuminated mondo business and other places like that are All There Is when it comes to spots to go in the nighttime. and when the only acts that are economically viable are bon jovi, u2 and the finalists from american idol. and the only people that can go see 'em are not like myself or the kids i went with to see some of the best shows ever (sunny day real estate, the decemberists, weezer, rilo kiley) on that very stretch of road. maybe there'll even be an olive garden and a best buy right inside the so-called district. bah humbug.
